Sarie Kumassah
Harvest City Christian Academy
Hello, my name is Sarie S. Kumassah. I have been a student at Harvest City Christian Academy since immigrating in 2012 to Canada from Italy. Coming to Canada with no knowledge or skill in English was a challenge, especially when making friends and expressing myself. However, being introduced to volleyball, basketball, and other sports at a young age was the most helpful in learning to make friends and grow in my connection with God.
Basketball and volleyball have been a part of my life all throughout high school. Recently, I have decided that I want to devote my complete attention to volleyball. Making that decision was difficult but I felt it was the best for me given my eagerness, work ethic and passion towards volleyball. This year I have the confidence to take a step forward in the sport by joining an official club team, called Stealth. I am also exploring the possibility of playing post-secondary volleyball while seeking an occupation as a social worker in Calgary.
As a child I didn’t land on many specific interests or dream big. As a result, deciding on a career path in high school was difficult. Despite that, I knew that I would select a career centered around helping others in complex situations. I want to lift others up and make a difference in people’s lives, which is why social work is the career I have chosen.
I am grateful for my parents’ support in my journey, and am thankful for the impact God has made in my life. Through school, athletics, and friendships I was able to gain experience and learn to work hard. Lastly, I am grateful to the Twelfth Year Photography Team for allowing the experiences of young teens to be included on their website.
