Emily M.

Balfour Collegiate

Hey there! My name is Emily and I have struggled with a physical disability my entire life. I was born with a condition called Hip Dysplasia. If the doctors had found out I had this condition when I was a baby or a toddler they could have prevented the permanent damage that this condition has subsequently caused me. During my entire childhood and early teens, I was medically gaslit by my doctors. I wasn’t diagnosed with this disability until approximately four years ago and by then I had already sustained irreversible damage. Even though I deal with Hip Dysplasia, a learning disability and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I have worked extremely hard to succeed both academically as well as within the community. Last year I had a 90% average even though I had to miss about a month of school due to having two surgeries. Along with this I was a part of SaskQTY and am active in advocating for the 2SLGBTQ+ and BLM movement. In my future I would like to become a Neuroscientist or a Genealogist so that I can help more people who feel their voices aren’t heard within the medical field, just as my surgeon has helped me. I hope that my story can show others that no matter what they’re going through things do get better when you continue to advocate for yourself.
